Welcome to the Group of Five Top 10, where it’s more American than 1980s Hulk Hogan draped in the Stars and Stripes riding a bald eagle on the Fourth of July.

Teams from the American Athletic Conference occupy four of the top five spots in the Top 10 through Week 8, including each of the top three: undefeateds Memphis, Houston and Temple.

The American is the center of the college football universe in the coming week, with Temple putting its perfect record on the line against Notre Dame in College Gameday‘s spotlight event.

Memphis’ Week 7 win over Ole Miss scored the American major cachet on top of Temple’s opening-week defeat of Penn State, and Houston’s road win at Louisville. Should the Owls knock Notre Dame out of Playoff contention, the committee may need to have a very serious conversation about including the conference’s champion in the tournament.
