It may still be summer, but Friday night made it feel an awful lot like autumn. High school football kicked off around the nation, and plenty of top college football recruits were in action.

They’re playing for their high schools, but college football recruits like Miami-bound Sam Bruce are repping for their future homes.

Jim Harbaugh is overseeing a quarterback competition in his first season at Michigan. If 4-star prospect Brandon Peters is as good as advertised, quarterback uncertainty will be a thing of the past in Ann Arbor.

Peters’ Avon (Indiana) High School team lost to Ben Davis High School, 49-42, but Michigan fans take heed. On the winning side was running back Chris Evans, another Wolverine commit. Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.com broke down the players’ performances.

Arizona is getting its own standout quarterback in 4-star Devon Modster of Tesoro High School (Orange County, California). Modster paced the Toros to an easy win over Edison, scoring three rushing touchdowns and passing for a fourth.

When UCLA head coach Jim Mora went on his highly publicized and overblown tirade on freshman quarterback Josh Rosen during Bruins training camp, Mora told Rosen to “go back to Bosco and beat more bad teams.”

Considering the Southern California powerhouse hung 76 points on La Mirada Friday, you can understand where Mora’s sentiment came from. Rosen’s replacement, sophomore Real Mitchell, plays a much different style.

But rest assured, the dual-threat Mitchell will be one of the nation’s top college football recruits sooner than later.

College football recruits from every corner of the nation will spend each weekend for the next three months doing their thing under the Friday night lights.

Of course, only a fraction of those youngsters donning pads and helmets this fall will play in college. For some, having the opportunity to play for the high school varsity is a reward all its own.

LSU Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron “Ready to Roll” After Prostate Cancer Treatment

LSU offensive coordinator told media Friday he’d “been given a clean bill of health” after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Cameron had a procedure that he said ensures he’ll go with the 2015 season and beyond without season without fear.

“We’re good. We’re ready to roll. All of our goals are intact: win the SEC and heading toward a national championship.”

Sun Belt Identifies Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky for Expansion

The Sun Belt seeking a 12th member for football affiliation hasn’t exactly been a secret, but rumors have circulated wildly, suggesting any number of potential targets for that bid.

On Friday, USA Today‘s Dan Wolken reported Eastern Kentucky (currently of the Ohio Valley Conference) and Coastal Carolina (Big South Conference) are the Sun Belt’s two leading contenders.

Neither is a surprise, as both programs have been mentioned closely with the Sun Belt in recent months. Coastal Carolina brass has gone so far as to publicly declare the Chanticleers would accept an invitation should it come.

However, this begs the question: what becomes of Liberty?

Liberty boasts one of the most FBS-ready home stadiums among current FCS members. University leaders have not been shy about suggesting Liberty’s interest in FBS membership, either.

While Liberty makes geographic sense for Conference USA, UAB’s impending return will give the league 14 members. That means Liberty would need a handcuff partner to come along for the ride.
