Each passing college football Saturday makes it increasingly clear Heisman Trophy voters and assorted other media have put as much space between Leonard Fournette and the rest of the field as Fournette puts between himself and a beaten safety on one of the running back’s breakaway runs.
The rest of the Heisman Top 10 is not nearly as apparent as Fournette’s growing lead.
USC quarterback Cody Kessler headlines his week’s noteworthy drops. His listless and confounding performance set the tone for the Trojans’ loss to Washington Thursday. Much like USC is likely out of the Top 25, Kessler is out of the Heisman Top 10.
Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds fought in the Mids’ loss at Notre Dame, rushing for 110 yards, but the end result was too lopsided to really springboard the outstanding playmaker’s Heisman candidacy.
And Georgia running back Nick Chubb, once a pace-setter in the Heisman race, may be lost for the season. Mark Richt told reporters in his postgame press conference he was optimistic Chubb’s injury would not require surgery, but the prospect of lost time for the already-fading Bulldogs likely dooms the talented running back’s Heisman prospects.
With the upheaval around college football, there’s plenty of room for movement in the Heisman Top 10. The chase for Fournette is on.
