Since his hire in December 2011, Arizona State head coach Todd Graham has touted building the program toward to its future while honoring its history. No one goes back further into Sun Devil — or Bulldog — history than 100-year-old Louis “Greg” Rappaport, and ESPN.com’s Kevin Gemmell chronicled Rappaport’s centennial anniversary, which included receiving a No. 100 jersey from Graham and Co.

The oldest Arizona State football alum, Rappaport shared some great insight with Gemmell covering the Depression-era game as played by the Arizona State Teachers College.

“Back then, you only passed like three or four times per game,” he said. “We had a great team. We were unscored upon until the sixth game of the season. Against Texas Western (El Paso) they threw a long pass and I remember Hascall Henshaw was supposed to get that man, and he caught it and ran for a touchdown. He was almost ready to cry. We still beat them 27-7.”

By contrast, the 2014 Sun Devils threw 467 passes — and that ranked just 34th in the nation. Indeed, Graham and his staff have their own modern twist, but Gemmell’s piece is a great glimpse into how Arizona State continues to honor its past.
