Keenan Reynolds Makes NCAA History…Twice

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditmail

It took a week longer, but Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds got his NCAA record-setting rushing touchdown Saturday against SMU.

Reynolds’ four-yard touchdown run was the 78th of his career, elevating him past Montee’ Ball for the NCAA’s all-time high. But on carries of 43 yards later in the first quarter, and eight early in the second quarter, Reynolds made some more history.

Ball was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011, prior to breaking former Miami (OH) star Travis Prentice’s rushing touchdown record. That’s noteworthy, because Keenan Reynolds’ Heisman candidacy is starting to pick up steam.

Navy’s upset of previously unbeaten Memphis last week helped put the senior quarterback in the national spotlight. The last few days included a guest spot on The Dan Patrick Show and a Sportscenter feature.

Reynolds certainly hasn’t faltered so far with his new-found notoriety. And, lest you dismiss his stake to the nation’s top, individual honor as a byproduct of him playing in an option offense, his Saturday includes a 72-yard touchdown pass.

Shades of another Navy quarterback legend, Roger Staubach, who won the Heisman in 1963.
