July 21 News: ACC Kickoff and Big 12 Media Days Roundups

Preludes to the 2015 season are in full swing in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Dallas, where the ACC Kickoff and Big 12 media days, respectively, started Monday.

Heading into a pivotal season, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen faces some big challenges. Holgo is known for his offensive chops, and the Mountaineers have indeed scored with the best of ’em since his arrival in Morgantown, but he told reporters at Big 12 media days that West Virginia’s defense “should be the best I’ve had since I started coaching 20 years ago.”

Slowing down offenses in the Big 12 could keep any coach up at night, what with the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 scoring teams a season ago (Baylor and TCU) reloading, Oklahoma bringing on spread guru Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma State featuring some potential breakout stars.

Holgorsen could use frequent Red Bull deliveries, like the below at Big 12 media days:

Holgorsen might consider sharing some of that with NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who met with the media at the ACC Kickoff.

It’s easy to see where a quarterback could get worn out at media days. TCU’s Heisman Trophy favorite Trevone Boykin snapped this terrific selfie at Big 12 media days. That’s quite a gallery behind him.

Whataburger Opens in Fayetteville and People Lose Their Minds

The only thing attracting a bigger crowd Monday than Trevone Boykin at Big 12 media days was the opening of Whataburger in Fayetteville. Say hello to the newest weapon in Bret Bielema’s recruiting arsenal.

Sharing a border with Texas has its advantages in the SEC, and having Texas’ best burger joint right near campus is an advantage all its own.

College Football’s Top 100 Teams of All-Time, 26-50

Matt Brown, Sports on Earth

Sports on Earth’s Matt Brown is counting down the 100 greatest teams in college football history, and volume three spotlights No. 26-50. Of note in this group is the 1991 Washington team that split the national championship with Miami.

The late “Dogfather” Don James had the best of many terrific teams in 1991, featuring Heisman Trophy candidate Steve Emtman on the defensive line. The Huskies beat Nebraska in Lincoln by two touchdowns and capped their 12-0 campaign with a 34-14 rout of Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

This particular Washington team is among the greatest in Pac-12 history, and its place in Brown’s rankings is well deserved.

College Football Needs A Group of Five Championship Game

The College Football Playoff, in its current format, paved a brick foundation over the sport’s glass ceiling. Group of Five programs are hard-pressed to break into the four-team tournament, so Underdog Dynasty has an interesting compromise: a championship exclusive to the Group of Five conferences.

Last year’s edition would have featured Boise State against Marshall, an intriguing matchup indeed. However, such a system does run the risk of further alienating these leagues from the Power Five, ostensibly breaking off into a third Division I subdivision.

The concept has decided pros and cons, either way.

Dismissed Florida State Quarterback De’Andre Johnson Seeking New Home

CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd reported Monday dismissed Florida State quarterback De’Andre Johnson contacted junior college Northeastern Oklahoma A&M about the possibility of enrolling.

Athletic director Dale Patterson told Dodd:

“There would have to be certain stipulations and certain agreements. America’s been a pretty forgiving place. I think everybody deserves a second chance. I think it all depends on what he’s willing to do.”

Johnson appears to have options.

East Mississippi took on current Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly last year following his dismissal from Clemson. Kelly threw for 3,906 yards and 47 touchdowns there last season.
